BARE IT ALL HOOF CARE

Welcome to the official website of Bare it All Hoof Care.

Now Servicing the Greater Gippsland Area

Who am I you wonder, and what can I offer you and your equine partner... well....

I was born and raised in the North Island of New Zealand with a previous farming and horticultural background.  In 1996 I moved to reside in Cairns Queensland where my interest in natural hoof care was born. After seven years in Cairns we moved with our dogs, two horses and cats to Tasmania and now as a final move we are relocating to Willung South in Gippsland Victoria.

We currently own three horses, the QH boy mentioned below, one qualified endurance horse (TB x QH) who is sponsored by Performance Horse Therapies and competes barefoot and in Easycare hoofboots, and lastly a rising three year old part arabian pinto filly who is our next endurance barefoot prospect.

Where did my passion for Hoofcare begin?

My initial interest in natural/barefoot hoofcare came about over 9 years ago when we purchased  Indi a 16hh quarter horse.  He came to us with long overgrown untrimmed feet and could barely walk.   Realising he was lame we did the normal thing that you do, called the farrier and it was recommended that shoes be applied.  At this stage he started moving and 'appeared' sound.

Once he was being ridden it was evident that a problem still existed as he could not safely walk down a hill without tripping flat on his face.  At this stage we started researching 'tripping horses' on the internet and constantly came across barefoot websites - promoting the benefits of barefoot horses with hooves returned to healthy form and function.  As it so happened at this time my wife had organised an equine massage clinic with Sharon May-Davis and with Sharon also assessing his condition we sent him off to be x-rayed for suspected navicular.

He had flexion tests, hoof testers applied, and finally x-rays.  The x-rays of his legs showed nothing but what we could see was the coffin bone at the bottom of the x-ray in a none to flattering angle.  The vet then x-rayed the hoof - you guessed it, he had severely foundered with evidence of remodeling of the tip of the coffin bone which suggested this had been going on for awhile.  This horse never stood with a founder stance, it was only the tripping that suggested that there was an underlying problem.

What next you ask?...... well we requested the assistance of our then farrier to trim as per the research we had been doing and to our surprise he declined, so it was now up to me to rehabilitate our severely foundered horse as I was not keen on the suggested alternatives. I am glad to report that this horse is still with us 9+ years later, happy and healthy in our paddocks and I owe everything I know and do now to him.  He was my catalyst for learning to trim, my first teacher and my motivation to continue to educate myself in all aspects of the equine hoof.
